Waiting for the Night by Stefuh

Hi everyone, here's a new story (again), ahah. But this one is a short story and only has 5 chapters and the epilogue. I hope you won't think it's too rushed or has lots of flaws since I wrote it really quickly. The title comes from a Depeche Mode song, because ... I'm Depeche Mode trash, ahah.

Mike kept on walking faster as he felt like the cold would soon be too much for him. God, why hadn't he wear the stupid gloves his friend Brad had lent to him after class? He was always looking out for him and Mike couldn't even be intelligent enough as he had forgotten them in his bag back at his dorm. He tried to breathe warm air on them, only seeing his breath coming out in white puff, signifying him that it was useless for him to warn himself up. He lowered his cap in his head, bringing his hoodie up so it could actually protect his ears from the cold before he put his hands deep into his pockets. He was nearly there. He didn't know why he had accepted to go out tonight since it was a school night and he had a lot of work to do – maybe it was the pleading look Brad had giving him before saying “come on, man, you never go out with us, it'll be fun.” He sighed as he looked up from the sidewalk. He only had the bridge to cross and he'd be at the bar. He was wondering if he would be able to convince Brad to come to his apartment this weekend to work on their project due for next week – they had almost finished it but Mike thought it still needed some touches up – when he noticed someone was leaning against the railing, looking down in the water as he was smoking a cigarette. Mike thought that it was way too cold tonight to indulged in a cigarette, especially above the water since the wind was even more fierce here, but he wasn't about to criticize this stranger. He nearly passed the other guy when he recognized him.

The last time he had seen him, he was sporting a red mohawk and he had smirked at the half Asian while riding his skateboard. A chill ran down Mike's spine remembering what had happened the last time he had met his old friend, but he tried to ignore it – this had been five years ago, surely the other man was different now.

“Chester?” he said as the other was taking another puff of his cigarette as his eyebrows lifted in surprise that someone was standing beside him. He looked over to Mike and a grin appeared on his face. Yes, he surely was different from the last time he had seen him. Chester had now shaved the side of his head while he had dyed the rest black. He still looked as young has he did five years ago – but something was different. He was skinnier and as far as Mike could see, since the young man was only wearing a t-shirt, he now had a lot more tattoos. But what really caught Mike was his eyes – they almost looked lifeless.

“Oh, shit, Mike, what are you doing here?”

“I live around here.”

Chester laughed at that before shaking his head and tossing the remaining of his cigarette in the river. “Small world, we always seem to follow each other.”

“Yeah... aren't you cold?” he asked. The half Asian couldn't help but shiver looking at Chester, if he was cold he couldn't understand how his the other young man must have felt right now.

He only shrug. “A bit. What are you doing right now? Do you want to go somewhere? Come on, it's been so long.”

Mike bit his lower lip as he considered Chester's words, it's true that he didn't have a lot of good memories about the tattooed man, especially not the most recent ones, but he did feel curious about what he had been up to the last couple of years. But then there was Brad waiting for him at the bar... Mike quickly got his cell phone out before firing a quit text to his friend telling him that he couldn't make it. He'd see Brad on Monday after all.

“Alright. Where do you wanna go?”

“Follow me.”

The rest of the walk was short as they talked – well, as Chester talked. He a lot of questions to asked to his old friend.

“What have you been up to these days?”

“I'm studying at the Art College not far from here, I work part time in a Gallery and I sell my stuff online.”

“So you have everything figured out, huh, Shinoda?”

“Well, yeah. When I'm going to graduate, I'm going to move out near Metaphysical, the Art Studio where I want to work.”

“Isn't that like a really big studio or something? I think I've heard about it.”

Mike smiled. “Yeah, it is. It's where I've always wanted to work. How about you?”

“We're here.” Chester said as he stopped in front a small bar that looked really shady and Mike couldn't help but grimace.

“You want to go in there?”

Chester frowned. “Well, yeah, I come here every week end.” He held the door open as Mike followed him inside, and to his surprise, it didn't seem as bad as he had thought. The place looked clean and friendly, and there were a lot of young people present. He was actually taken aback when he saw Anna Hillinger sitting at the bar with another young woman. “You know this girl?” Chester asked and Mike shook his head.

“No, she's in one of my class and I've talked to her once or twice but that's it.”

As Chester looked back at her and then at Mike, a grin appeared on his face once more. “You have a crush on her.”

A slight blush crept on the half Asian's cheeks as he nodded. “Yeah, but-”

“Find us a table, I'll go get us a couple of beers.”

Mike sighed as he finally settle on a table not too far from the bar – yes, he wanted to be able to see Anna from where he was sitting. He didn't want to stalk her, just be able to see her once or twice during the night. When Chester got back, he put the drinks on the table as he sat across from Mike.

“You're gonna go talk to her?”

The younger man only shook his head as he took a sip of his beer. “No, I mean, I'm here with you and we're supposed to catch up, right?” he said, hoping Chester would let it go.

“So what have you been up two for the last couple of years?”

“I dropped out of high school and got a couple of jobs here and there.”

Mike nodded as he remembered how though his friend had it back in the day with his family. He hadn't seen them since he was around ten, but since they were both living on the same street, he often heard his own parents talking about how Chester and his sister had it worse then anyone around town. He always wondered if he was getting beat up or just yelled at, but seeing how Chester treated him every time he saw him, he had never gotten the nerve to ask him. A part of him was regretting it right now but surely Chester was better now that he was out of his home, right?

“Right now I'm working the corner.”

Mike titled his head as he squinted his eyes. He certainly didn't mean that he was selling his body for cash... No, maybe he was selling drugs or something like that. “What do you mean?”

“I'm a hooker.”

Mike nearly choked on his beer, coughing once or twice, as he quickly tried to regain his breath. “Oh.” he finally said and Chester dropped his gaze, seeming really interested in destroying the napkin in front of him in small pieces and Mike realized how his answer must have sounded – like he was disgusted by what Chester was doing. “I mean, do you, hm, like it?” He cringed at his own question but Chester shrugged and looked back at him.

“Yeah, I mean, it's not perfect, but I do a lot of money. I'm not ashamed of it.”

Mike nodded. “Well, that's good. I think. Do you, like... have a pimp or something?”

“No, no, I work by myself. I mean, I do have some friends in the business that helped me at first to get some clients, but otherwise, what I get paid I can keep it to myself.”

Mike was about to ask if he had been doing that for a while now, when he heard a small voice next to him. “Mike?” He quickly turned to see that Anna had come to their table and was now smiling at him as his heart began to accelerate against his rib cage.

“Anna! Hi-What are you doing here?”

“I came with my friend.” She pointed at the other girl with long brown hair that was still sitting at the bar. “It's actually the first time I see you in here.”

“Yeah, hm, Chester showed it to me.” He said as he looked at the other man who was smiling, clearly way too interested by the fact that Mike and Anna were now talking.

“Oh, that's great, I hope I'll see you more around.”

Mike only nodded and an awkward silence settle in as Chester frowned before he began to speak. “So, Anna, right? You study art like Mike?”

“No, we have a creative writing class together.”

“Oh, you're a writer?”

Anna blushed. “Well, I'm trying to be.”

“What do you write?”

“A little bit of everything, but right now I'm trying to work on a book.”

“Wow, that's great, isn't Mike? Wouldn't you want to read it?”

Everyone's gaze was now back on the half Asian as he tried his best to smile to the young woman. “Yeah, I'd love that.”

She smiled too and Mike's heart skipped a beat.

“Well, I have to go back to Talinda... it was nice seeing you. We'll see each other on Tuesday?”

“Yeah, for sure.”

She nodded and went back to the bar as Mike finally sighed.

“Dude, that was awkward.” Mike groaned at Chester's remark. “You like her, don't you? I can tell. Why don't you try to bring her back to your place?”

“I'm not into one night stand-”

“I'm not saying that it has to be your only night with her.”

Mike started to trace the small circle of condensation that had appeared on the table underneath his beer bottle as he avoided Chester's gaze and the tattooed man's eyes suddenly widenned.

“You're a virgin.”

The half Asian nearly toppled his beer bottle as he caught it just in time before it spilled on the table. He didn't think Chester would be so direct with him, but again, that's how he had always been.

“I thought you had everything figured out but … if you did, you'd already had settle with someone and you'd marry her by the time you'd be 25, right? Probably with a couple of kids?”

Mike bit his lower lip as he felt himself becoming angrier at the fact that Chester could read him like a book. “I don't … do relationships. I've tried before and it always ended up badly...”

“You can't let yourself get discouraged by that. Anna seems like a nice girl. Come on, you'll regret it if you don't go talk to her.”

Mike bit his lower lip, staring at his beer bottle, still feeling as tensed and nervous. What Chester was saying was true but he just couldn't find the confidence in him to go talk to her.

“Look, do you have doubts about your art?”

“Your future?”

“Yeah, even if I have a plan, I'm not a 100% sure if it'll go that way.”

“But you're still pushing to reach it, right?”

“Of course, I am, I could miss my chance of-” Mike's eyes widenned as he understood what Chester was trying to tell him and his eyes fell on Anna again, who was laughing at something Talinda had said. “Oh.”

“Exactly. So, come on, go to her and-”

A blush still crept on the half Asian's cheek and Chester frowned. “Is there something more that you're not telling me?”

“It's just that … god, this is so stupid.”

“Believe me, I've seen everything and I mean, everything, related to sex, so whatever you say won't surprise.”

“The last … person … I was with told me I was an ass at kissing and since then, I... I can't help but ...”

Chester only shook his head as he got up from his chair and took Mike's hand in his. “Follow me.” He almost lifted the younger man from his chair as the latter had no choice but to follow Chester in the bathroom.

Once he made sure the place was empty, he pushed the other against the wall and as he got really close to his friend, Mike suddenly yelp. “What are you doing?!”

“Teaching you.”

“I don't-I mean, I can't-”

“Shut up and let me kiss you, Mike.”

The other tensed as he felt the tattooed man closer to him until he could taste a mixture of cigarette, beer and mint on his breathe, and before he knew it, Chester's lip were on his. His eyes fluttered shut as their lips started to move, and soon enough the older man had pushed his tongue against Mike's lower lip, asking him access. Mike parted his lips as he felt Chester's taste overflowing his senses as he slide his tongue against his, tenderly at first.

A flood of memories overcame him and as images became to flash behind his closed eyelids, he couldn't help but remember how they had stop seeing each other when they had been around 10 years old.

Chester and Mike were in the latter's room playing video games. Mike's mother had came home with a Nintendo and Mike had immediately called Chester to tell him to come play with him. His mother had told him time and time again since he had become friend with Chester a year ago that his family wasn't as rich as Mike's and that he had to threat his friend to things he couldn't have – Mike had only shrugged since he didn't mind sharing his stuff.

He wasn't like Jason.

When Chester had arrived they had soon started Donkey Kong, and two hours later, Chester had found himself bored with the game.

“Can we do something else?”

“Yeah, like what?”

“I don't know...”

Mike closed the game and sat back on the floor as he looked around in his room, trying to find something to do. Maybe they could go play outside-

“Elka kissed me after class yesterday.” Chester suddenly said and the half Asian grimaced in disgust.

“That's gross.” Mike replied.

“No, it isn't!”

“Yes, it is!”

Chester shook his head. “You say that because you've never kissed anyone.”

Mike felt himself blushed at Chester's words, wondering if he should feel ashamed that he wasn't really interested in girls yet.

“I can show you.”

“What?” he asked, unsure if he had heard his friend wrong. “Show me what?”

And before Mike could say anything, Chester leaned towards him and put his lips against Mike's as the latter one was ready to push him off him... only he didn't. Because it did felt nice. As Chester pulled back, Mike blushed some more and nodded.

“It's true. It felt good.”

Chester smiled at him. “Let's go play basketball!” He said as he scrambled to his feet to search for the ball, and Mike followed him.

They never talked about that kiss again.

He had never told Chester that his father had seen them and had been so mad that he had restricted them from seeing each other again. Over the years, he had became more reasonable about the fact that Mike was bisexual but at the time, he had only seen Chester as someone who could ruin Mike's perfect future. He needed to marry a nice girl and have a couple of kids, not fool around with boys – if he started now, he certainly wouldn't stop. Muto needed to put an end to this.

“I'm sorry, my dad says we can't be friends anymore.”

“What, why?”

He shrugged. “You're a bad influence or something.”

He had seen the hurt and anger in Chester's eyes and he had only lowered his head in shame. He didn't want to let go of his friend but he couldn't go against his father's words – he had never done so before and he couldn't find the guts to do it now. His dad was strict and he had told him that he would meet plenty other friends at school. They weren't at the same school since Mike was going to a “much better school” but he did live on the same street as Chester... it would be hard avoiding him from now on.

Mike got back from memory lane as Chester pressed his body even closer to Mike. The kiss soon turned passionate and Mike let out a moan just as Chester pulled back from him. He tried to regain his breath for a moment, eyes still close, before he finally looked back at his friend who was smiling and the realization of what had just happened hit him.

He opened his mouth to say something but Chester only shook his head. “Believe me, Mike, whoever told you you couldn't kiss was a complete asshole. Now go out there and do your best to seduce Anna, okay?” He patted his friend's shoulder before he took a step back, winking. “I'll see you soon, man.”

Mike stood for some time against the wall as the door opened again and a stranger came in. He quickly shook himself and went to the mirrors to make sure he looked alright, before he took a deep breath and opened the door.

Tonight, he would go home with Anna Hillinger.
