CHAPTER 1: The Proposal or the Scandal
Mike paced the hotel bedroom in deep thought. For the past couple of weeks Chester, his boyfriend, for the last three and a half years, officially since last year, had been acting weird… well weirder than normal. Chester and Marin, Mike’s friend that he met in college, had been spending a lot of time together. Whether the pair were making excuses to leave after rehearsals or talking after shows or even coming back from places together, it was definitely obvious something was going on. And just two day ago, Chester had been acting weirdest of all.
Mike and Chester had been dating since he was twenty- three, while Chester and Sam had been together. However Sam and Chester were having problems then when Chester first joined the group and even before hand. So his and Chester’s relationship had been slow but that didn’t bother either of them, not because they were in denial about their feelings, but they didn’t want to botch this and also because of Chester’s obvious family problems.
And it didn’t help that Chester even had a baby out of it, three years into his and Mike’s relationship. Chester was even going to confront Sam about the two of them and risk losing his son, Dravven. Fortunately that was when Sam had come clean that she had been cheating on Chester and that she couldn’t have the baby because her boyfriend was a big executive that she had met at one of their labels and kids from other marriages just weren’t in his future. So Chester and Sam came to the decision that Chester would get Dravven once he was born and Sam would get the house and 50,000 dollars incase her relationship didn’t work out.
That was a year ago and here we are in 2003 and though Mike thought Chester loved him, it had been a fear of his for quite some time now, that . . . maybe Chester had loved the thrill in their relationship than the relationship itself. The two had never really said that they liked other men; they just knew they liked each other and that was all that mattered. But now, what if Mike was the only male Chester ever loved but he still loved women more.
Mike looked at the clock on the dresser, 10:30 pm; Chester said he was taking a walk, fresh air would do him some good, of course that was four hours ago. Mike stopped his self-making-suspense for a moment, deciding that he was just being paranoid. ‘Chester and Marin were probably just bonding. Marin does have that charm about her. And right now, Chester was probably just sight seeing, of course with touring and all there’s really nothing anyone in the group hadn’t seen yet, but there’s nothing wrong with looking at something for the 500th time.’ Just as Mike was calming his nerves, he heard the door click.

As Mike sat at the café, in the hotel, for breakfast, he was too deep in thought, with his stomach in knots, to notice Marin take a seat opposite him at the table… that is until he felt a slight pain in his left ear. Looking up, he realized Marin had pinched his ear, while wearing a smug grin on her face as she removed it, to, instead, use as a pillow for her cheek.
“So did he tell you?” asked Marin, expressing, not only in her voice, but also in her, now sparkling, green eyes, much anticipation, while leaning on the table, with her face in-between her hands.
Mike couldn’t help but think that this had all, partially, been planned by Marin, and he couldn’t help but break out into a grin, at the thought. “Yeah, he told me last night,” Mike said, chuckling slightly, at Marin’s out-of-character-like giddiness. Apparently Joe was starting to be a bad influence on her, but then again, Marin was actually like this when he’d first met her.
“Alright, alright, enough with the vagueness, show me the ring!” Marin said, waving her right hand in a circular motion to make her point.
Mike smiled, as Marin took hold of his out-stretched right hand to show the silver band on his ring finger, feeling so much like a girl as he did so. Marin couldn’t help but smile as well, remembering her conversation with Chester, for when they first got it.
FLASHBACK
“Okay, now that that’s out of the way, let’s get down to business,” said Chester, looking finally convinced, as he and Marin walked up to the counter of the jewelry store.
“How may we help sir?” Came the voice of a, too sweet to be true, counter woman, after finally acknowledging the pair, after five minutes. “We would like to buy an engagement ring,” came the voice of Chester, slightly annoyed, as the woman looked him up and down, obviously not thinking him worth much, before moving to the cubic-zirconiac section.
And if Chester didn’t love Mike as much as he did, which he was glad to know would never happen, he would have cursed her out right then and there before flashing her a wad of bills and leaving. But instead he spoke in a calm voice, saying, “No we would like to move the real jewelry please” he spoke, using the same sickeningly sweet voice against the woman, mockingly.
“As you wish sir,” replied the woman, seeming un-vexed, but the small irritation in her voice spoke otherwise. “What would you like, gemstones, rubies, maybe our classic diamonds…” Replied the woman, pointing down at the jewelry through the glass, obviously still not trusting Chester, yet he was satisfied that he was at least getting to her.
“No, we actually have a drawing,” replied Marin, pulling out a piece of paper and handing it to Chester, who placed it on the table. As the woman looked the drawing over, slightly intrigued by its’ design. After assuming that the woman had seen enough, Chester spoke, giving instructions on what he wanted. “… and I also want these inscriptions placed on either side of the ring,” Chester explained, showing the woman the paper again, pointing to a part of the drawing, every time he came to new piece.
Seeing the woman’s unhidden astonishment, and it took all of Chester’s power to restrain himself from grinning like Cheshire-cat, Chester spoke again. “And how much would all of this cost?” The woman, after regaining her posture, from her previous look of shock, said, “Well with what you’ve picked as the band, as well as the rare gem, itself, and inscriptions cost about three dollars a letter… and you have twenty-one, all together… that should cost about… four, maybe five grand,” said the woman with a smug look on her face until she gazed into Chester’s unfazed face.
Nodding his head, Chester said, “Sounds like a good deal.” Restraining herself from fuming, the woman spoke again, except this time forcefully pressing down on her sweetness. “And how would you like to pay for, this? I’m sorry to say, we don’t take loans or lay-aw---” “We have cash,” replied Chester, dropping a wad of bills down on the counter, a small satisfied smile playing on his face, as the woman’s eyes, literally, bulged out.
“I assume that’s enough,” Chester replied, seeing as the woman was preoccupied. When only able to nod a response, Chester and Marin left, but not before saying that they’d be back in a couple days. After returning to the shop, Marin had forced Chester to calm his nerves before talking to Mike, honest to god, the man had looked like he was ready to throw-up.
END FLASHBACK
Marin couldn’t help but smile at her last comment, not to mention the ridiculousness of the whole flashback.
“What’s so funny?” Mike asked; eyebrows arched in confusion. “Oh nothing, I was just thinking about what we had to go through to get this beauty,” she said, especially eying the italic inscriptions on both sides of the ring.
“And speaking of details, how’d the proposal go?” Marin asked, remembering Chester’s nervousness. “Well… it was original,” Mike said, basing out his last word as he told Marin ,in detail, what had happened last night.
FLASHBACK
While Chester crossed the room, Mike couldn’t help but notice that he looked a little pale, well paler than usual. As Chester sat down on the bed beside Mike, Mike also noticed that Chester was avoiding eye contact with him. After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Chester finally spoke, or rather sighed loudly.
Mike suddenly felt a light weight on his left knee, looking down to find Chester’s hand resting on top. As his eyes traveled up, they instantly locked on Chester’s. And his piercing gaze was enough to silence his inquiries.
After using his other hand to hold Mike’s, Chester said, “Mike, we’ve known each other for a long time right?” All Mike could do was nod a response, not sure where Chester was going with this. “And you’ve been a great parent to Draven, better than any woman could’ve… but I’ve always felt there was something missing…”
‘Oh great, he’s going to tell me. “I’m” not what he’s missing. He’s still as straight as a board and in love with our best friend, Marin. Well, I guess the least I can say is that it’ll make a great headliner, “NU-METAL BAND, LINKIN PARK, REVISIT THE DISCO ERA… AT LEAST FOR A MOMENT (cont. pg.23)” Yeah, that’d be “great”, but at least I wouldn’t be the only one suffering. Joe wouldn’t be too happy either to know that his girlfriend ditched him for his formerly gay best friend. Now if that isn’t depressing, I don’t know what is.’
“Mike, Mike, did you hear me?” Chester said, waving his hand in front of Mike’s face. “Huh,” Mike said after snapping back to reality. “W-what did you say?” ‘Did he already say it?’ Mike thought. “I said, “And that’s why I know that this really is the best decision I could have ever made… I just hope you feel the same…” ‘Okay, I don’t know where the hell he’s going with this, but I’m not getting tired of beating around the bush. So if he’s not going to ask me, then I’m just going to have to ask him,’
“Chester… are you cheating on me?” Mike asked, deciding it was better to just be blunt than continue this charade. “No!” Chester said, almost shouting at the off-guard statement, and his eyes held such an intense expression of disbelief, that Mike believed him. “So… what do you want to tell me,” Mike said, somewhat relieved and yet still apprehensive. “Well, I’m… getting to that,” Chester said, the nervousness back in his voice as he got off the bed to kneel down in front of Mike, in between his legs.
Now Mike was completely lost with Chester’s reasoning, as he put his right hand on Mike’s knee. “As I’ve already said Mike, though we’ve been dating for three years now, for a while, I’ve felt that there has been something missing. And though I know this sounds cheesy, that person is you, as a part of Draven’s and my life completely,” Chester said, as he pulled out a small sliver polyester box, out of his left pants pocket, and opening it up, “So I hope you feel the same way when I ask,” he pulled out the ring, “Will you marry me?”
Mike just stared back at Chester dumb-founded, but in his head, many thoughts were circling. ‘Well, that came out of nowhere. Well, maybe if I hadn’t been so stupidly caught up in thinking he was having an affair, it would have been more obvious! Okay, let’s recap here. He wants to marry me. So this explains why he’s been acting so weird. I just made a complete ass of myself and he still wants to marry me!”
“Mike?” Chester asked, snapping Mike out of his thought process. “Chester… y-you want to marry me?” Mike asked, both guilt in shock evident in his voice. “Yes,” was Chester’s simple reply. “But… “why? I mean, I just acted like a complete asshole to you , and accused you of cheating on me. I acted like I didn’t trust you. I don’t deserve to marry you.” Mike said, angry but unshedful tears forming in his eyes.
“Mike I am not angry with you. If you had been busy making excuses with Marin and disappearing on me all the time, I’m sure I would have probably came up with the same conclusion. Probably worse, being drunk and causing a scene in the lobby. Even if it would have made a great headliner,” Chester said, smiling as he finished.
Mike couldn’t help but laugh at the statement. After a minute or so, with the tension in the room gone, Chester asked, “So what d’you say?” “Well, how can I say no to an answer like that. Of course I’ll marry you,” Mike said, smiling at Chester in the process.
“You will?” Chester asked, relieved surprise clear in his voice, while Mike nodded a reply. “YES, YES!” Chester shouted in excitement, hugging Mike as he jumped up off the floor, kissing him passionately on the lips when he was done.
Once finished, Chester pulled away, grinning like a mad man as he did. All Mike could do was smile back lovingly before looking down at the ring that was placed on his finger. The band itself was made of real silver, and in the dent in the middle of the ring sat, instead of a diamond, a blue sapphire, giving it a nice tint. It was beautiful. Looking closely, Mike noticed small curved inscriptions circling the ring; that read “Chester loves Mike forever, with loves as a heart symbol instead, written in both English and Japanese.
“You got it written in Japanese too,” Mike said, his voice in complete awe. “Yes,” Chester said, his eyes and voice softening at his boyfriend-now-fiancé’s reaction. Before he knew it, he was pulled into a tight embrace as Mike kissed him softly on the lips, “Thank you,” being all he said when they finished. The two kissed again, more hungrily this time, as they carried their activity towards the bed.
END FLASHBACK
Mike had a love-sick expression written on his face as the memory ended. Marin didn’t need to know all the details. “I bet that was a real good proposal,” Marin said, catching Mike’s gaze. “Yeah, but I still feel like an ass though. I mean, isn’t it a bad omen to have a lack of trust for your partner the day he asks you to marry him?” Mike asked, a serious expression on his face as he looked at Marin. “Well, you only had it before he asked you, and with good reason, so stop worrying. Besides that’s the least of your problems right now.” Marin said, a thoughtful look on her face as she finished.
“What do you mean?” Mike asked. “Well now you have to start planning your wedding, telling your parents and the guys, picking a date and a location, things like that,” Marin finished but regretted it the moment she saw Mike’s panic written face.

Okay, that’s the end of chapter one, I know it wasn’t that good, but hey, it was just the proposal. Next chapter involves telling the parents and friends, not to mention, plans for the wedding itself, please review.
