Our Prologue
It was a sunny day. My best friend and I were resting with our backs lied down on the grass and our face faced to the clear, blue sky.
“What do you see in that cloud?” I asked Mike, pointing at one cloud that shaped like a frog.
“I see....a cat.” Mike answered, narrowing his eyes to have a look. “How 'bout you?”
“A frog.”
“Chaz, can I tell you something?”
“Sure, what's up?”
“I never thought I'd tell you this...” he breathed out.
“What is it?”
“You remember in Fifth grade, we had to write a report on what we think we'll end up doing in the future?”
“Yes.”
“Well, if I die at early....Will you be there for me?”
“Dude... Why so serious about death now?” I asked.
“I just want an answer from you.”
“Of course. I'll be there for you, Mikey.”
“Thanks.... I'll tell you what. If I die early, put me in a grave that'll be near you. Bring me some roses and hold my hand before I pass out?”
“Of course.” I mumbled as I eschewed the status.
I looked at Mike who was actually smiling at his fearful words.
“Mike.” I said.
“Yeah?”
“Don't believe in young death.” I stated fast.
We were still 11 back then. I never thought Mike would think about death when he wasn't even halfway through his life. We were just starting the journey.
13 years later.
“No! Mike, wake up!” I rasped as I ran in his room of the hospital.
I flashed at the bed. I flashed at him. I felt sorrow rising above my heart.
“Mike!” I ran to him and sat down on my knees in front of him. I leaned on the bed, squeezing onto the sheets. Strangling over his view, I ruptured into tears. Hot tears rolled down my cheeks and dripped down to stain the fabric.
“Mike... no... Don’t die... Please don’t die. Just don’t die!”
He looked fallen; Closed eyes. With his breathing mask on his mouth.
“Mike... please. You can't die.” I sobbed, as I buried my face into the sheets.
The hearing sounds of the heart machine made me nervous. I couldn't take it. My hands were gripped on tight. And my eyes were getting tired. They were assaulting with wet tears.
“Mike. Just don’t die. Okay?” I cried. “I love you.. I love you!! You can’t hear me.... You can’t see me anymore... I love you... Don’t go away.... Remember me.... I love you. You hear me?” I yelled. But no respond.
“Mike...”
“Sir?” Mike... No, he... He can’t be... The heart machine’s still beeping.
“Excuse me, sir.” Jaded in sorrow, I did not clearly hear the man’s voice. I slowly turned around.
“Sir. I’m gonna have to ask you to leave this room immediately.”
“Why?”
“Mr. Shinoda needs some rest right now. You will have time to meet him again.”
“Tell me... why is he suffocating like this?” I asked, as I rose up from the floor.
“He's been shot. And occasionally hit by a car accident.”
I wiped my tears off. I couldn't stand here all day and cry. I rushed out of the room and ran through the halls, still sobbing... when suddenly I heard someone call my name. “Woah woah! There he is! Chester!”
“Rob? Anna?” I sniffed.
I saw Rob with his police uniform on and Anna with her occasional beautiful look.
“Chester,” Anna sighed, as she comforted me in her arms. “Are you alright?”
I tried to speak, but my sobs wouldn't stop. “Mike… Mike... He's.”
“We know. We's really sorry...” her sweet voice made me feel just a bit better.
“Why don't we take him home? He could stay with us for a while?” I heard Rob suggest.
“Yes, come on Chester. We're taking you to our place.” Anna said, as she pushed me gently to get going. I roughly pulled away.
“No! I wanna see Mike! I'm not going until I see him open his eyes!” I yelled.
Rob looked at me, surprised. “Mike needs some rest. And I don't think he'll be awake 'till the next day.”
“What...” I lightly gasped.
Anna and Rob frowned at me. I looked down on my feet and dropped my weight on the floor. I put my hands on my face just to cover my tears that tremendously dripped on the floor.
My heart is broken.
